Simple Handmade Soap Packaging and Wrapping

Everything you need for our packaging ideas can be found in your household, garden or on walks in nature. Unfortunately, if it doesn’t look the part it is often too easily passed over. Add a soap dish and cloth to your homemade soap packaging for extra value! Places like Homegoods and World Market often have a great selection of soap dishes and cloths. If paper doilies aren’t for you and you want a little more of a creative challenge, consider using a die-cut design.

As you can imagine, there are plenty of ways you can go about packaging homemade soap. From shrink wrap to muslin bags and kraft pillow boxes, you can use a lot of things to package your homemade soap. First of all, you can decorate handmade soap with flowers or herbsin the soap making process. In this case, the soap IS the packaging and can be given as is, or with a simple bow tied around it.

All you need is a bit of crinkle paper filler to keep the soap from shifting around inside. Not only is this rustic soap packaging idea painless to recreate, it’s also eco-friendly as the soap packaging is all biodegradable. Add a custom sticker or tie the box off with ribbon for a more elegant presentation. Another creative approach to packaging handmade soaps is to use a window soap label. These unique, cigar band style soap labels have a window cut out of the center in a shape of your choosing.

Different patterns and colours of lace will look beautiful together. I can see these being really pretty presented alongside a vintage tea cup candle. If you’re into making candles then this could be a fun project. Just as you can wrap cold process soaps in fabric, you can also wrap them in felt!

You can also use a custom box with a die-cut cutout in it. It looks professional and gives a little window onto the soap so that you can see its color. But even without a window, a soapbox looks clean and finished, and you can use all the sides for text and information.

You can also use clear boxes to package your homemade soaps or even colored boxes that match your business branding. Or you can also use kraft pillow boxes as another way to package homemade soap in boxes. Alternately, you can discover more ways to package round soaps here.

You can use both dried and fresh foliage and flowers to add even more interest. There’s a few ways that you can do it though and if you’re using fresh materials you need to be more careful. This felted soap from Woolove is the perfect example of how nice felted soap can look. You can add any image or design you like to your soaps to celebrate a season or holiday. I also really like this idea for packaging egg shaped soaps from Substation Paperie.

A mesh "scrubbie" bag in the shower will have the same effect as a scrubbie embedded in the soap. Like felted soap, you never actually see the bar of soap inside.

Place your soap into the cup and tie a piece of string or twine into a bow. It provides a comforting, home-cooked aesthetic for your small business. Though a lot of lace comes in narrow ribbons, you could also get wider types. These ones could cover most of the bar and be really pretty next to others that might have only a thin strip of lace.

Personalized Gift

With decorating and gifting soap, contrasting decorations can really make your handmade bars look even more beautiful. One of the most eco-friendly ways to decorate handmade soap is to use a reusable material. You could use a piece of fabric but the most obvious that comes to mind is a soft wash cloth. It could be your standard terry cloth type or a basic cloth like the one in the photo above. I’m going to let you in on a little secret behind that cloth.

There is almost practically no occasion when soap would make a lousy gift. Throughout my years of soap gift-giving, I’ve discovered many different, creative, and aesthetic ways to package soap. Fresh ingredients such as fruits, vegetables, or milk are best avoided in a melt and pour soap recipe, as they will always spoil eventually. Carefully pop the soap bars from the mold by pushing on the bottom to release the soap. Once the soap base is melted, you can place your mold on a cookie sheet or a large tray before pouring your soap.
